This part time course will give students confidence and a positive attitude towards mathematics. It will also enable students to recognise the importance of maths in their own lives and society. It could also provide a vital stepping stone to Higher Education. You will cover a range of topics for instance general arithmetic, algebra, shape and space and data handling. GCSE Mathematics is offered as a 3-hour lesson once a week for one academic year. Options are available in the day and evening.

Entry Requirements

Applicants will be given an initial assessment to check their starting levels and, in cases where there are gaps in knowledge, a referral to our Functional Skills courses will be made.

All candidates will be given a Digital Skills assessment and will be offered a short course to improve this area of their knowledge if this is deemed suitable.

Assessment

You will sit three exams which are externally assessed at the end of the course in May/June.

This is an intensive course of study and attendance at teaching sessions is vital for a successful outcome, as is completion of homework and independent study.

Progression

Students may go on to one of the Access to HE courses at CCN or many university courses which require GCSE maths at Grade 4/5. Many vocational courses also have this requirement.

Career Progression

Maths is a central part of your progression to other courses and employment. It isn’t just about knowing how to carry out certain calculations. It is about the essential skills of recognising problems, pursuing solutions, and communicating explanations, all of which are highly sought after in the workplace.

The course is free for anyone who has not yet achieved a Grade C or 4 or above. For students who have already achieved a Grade C/4 or above who are looking to improve their grade please contact the Advice Shop on 01603 773773 for fee information.
