What You Will Study
This course is for young people aged 16 to 18 who want to improve their English and maths skills.
You will develop your speaking, listening, reading and writing skills, as well as your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Lessons will help you use English with confidence in everyday life, education and work.
You will study topics that are useful and interesting, including:
- Health and wellbeing
- Sport and leisure
- Jobs and careers
- Travel and transport
- Life in the UK
- Current events and culture
You will also take part in trips and enrichment activities to help you practise your English in real-life situations and become more confident.
We offer the following ESOL levels:
- ESOL Entry Level 1 plus Maths
- ESOL Entry Level 2 plus Maths
- ESOL Entry Level 3 plus Maths
- ESOL Level 1 plus Maths
Your level will be decided after your interview and assessment.
Alongside ESOL, you will:
- Study Functional Skills Maths at the right level for you
- Develop digital and computer skills
- Improve your employability and work skills
- Explore vocational subject areas through taster sessions
- Learn about life, study and work in the UK
Our supportive staff will help you achieve your goals and prepare for your next step in education, training or employment.
Entry Requirements
There are no formal qualifications needed to join this course.
You must be aged 16 to 18 and have English as an additional language.
Before you start, we will invite you to an interview and an English assessment. This helps us find the right level for you and make sure you receive the support you need.
How You Will Be Assessed
You will work towards a recognised ESOL qualification.
Your progress will be assessed throughout the year, and you will complete formal assessments and exams when you are ready.
Some students may be able to achieve one ESOL qualification and progress to the next level during the same academic year.
Course Progression
After successfully completing the course, and with good attendance and commitment, you may be able to progress to:
- A higher level ESOL course
- Functional Skills or GCSE programmes
- Vocational courses at City College Norwich
- Apprenticeships or training programmes
- Employment

If you are a UK or home fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course, tuition fees are free.
