What You Will Study

Explore the fundamentals of oil painting and develop your confidence with colour, light, brushwork and texture on this creative six-week course. Suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some previous painting experience, the course provides a supportive environment to experiment with oil paint and develop your own approach.

You'll begin by getting to grips with oil painting materials, including paints, brushes, mediums and surfaces, before progressing through practical exercises inspired by influential art movements. You'll explore how artists have used oil paint in different ways, including the bold colour of Impressionism, expressive brushwork, dramatic light in Baroque painting and the distinctive forms of Cubism.

A key part of the course will be creating a single canvas divided into four sections, with each section exploring a different artistic approach. This hands-on project allows you to experiment with colour, brushwork, texture, light and composition while seeing how different techniques can transform the same subject.

Over the six weeks you'll explore:

• Oil painting materials, mediums, brushes and studio practice
• Colour mixing and creating different textures and effects
• Light, shade and atmosphere through paint
• Impressionism, expressionism, baroque painting and cubism
• Different approaches to brushwork, colour and composition
• Developing your own ideas through practical painting exercises
• Creating a final four-part oil painting exploring different artistic styles

No previous experience is required. Whether you're completely new to oil painting or looking to develop your existing skills, you'll have plenty of opportunities to experiment, learn and build confidence with this versatile medium.

This course will run on Thursdays from 6pm to 8.30pm.
