What You Will Study

Our Access to Higher Education Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences, as validated by CAVA, is a qualification which prepares students aged 19 and over without the relevant qualifications for degree-level study. You will study three of the following main subjects: History, English and Politics.

  • English Literature: You will study topics including: Children’s Literature, The Novel, and The Study of Poetry.
  • History: topics studied will include Historical Sources, The British Empire, and Period Study.
  • Politics: You will study topics including Key Political Concepts, Political Philosophy, and Theories of International Relations.

You will also study topics to support your academic skills, such as Critical Thinking and Research Skills.

The course is delivered over three days a week at the Norfolk House campus. You will have classes for 16 hours per week on campus, but you are also expected to engage in independent study alongside this. The course is broadly equivalent to studying for three A Levels, so this one year course is quite fast-paced.

Entry Requirements

  • You need to have achieved, or be working towards, GCSE English language and maths at grade 4 or above.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be supported throughout the course by a personal tutor who will also give you guidance in applying for Higher Education courses. You will study a core of communications, research and study skills. CAVA is the awarding body, and you will be awarded credits on completion of each units with a pass, merit or distinction grade. All credits are awarded are awarded at Level 3 which broadly equates to A Level study. Assessment is continuous over the whole year and is based on a number of set pieces of work such as essays, projects, presentations and examinations.

Lecturers will use a variety of teaching methods to prepare you for degree-level study.
