What You Will Study

Our Access to Higher Education Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences (Online), as validated by CAVA, is a qualification which prepares students aged 19 and over without the relevant qualifications for degree-level study.

Our online provision offer learners to study three main subjects: Criminology, Psychology and English. All learners will also complete Study Skills units. Learners will achieve a total of 60 credits.

Criminology: You will study units that develop your understanding and awareness of Theories of Crime, Psychology in the Courtroom and Offender Profiling.

Psychology: You will develop an understanding of the main critical psychological perspectives and theories. You will progress in subsequent units by studying issues surrounding conformity and obedience, and psychopathology.

English Literature: You will study units that develop your knowledge of Children’s Literature, The Study of the Poetry, and Analysis of a Dramatic Text.

Entry Requirements

You need to have achieved, or be working towards, GCSE English Language and Maths at grade 4 or above.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will study a core of communications, research and study skills. You will be awarded credits on completion of each units with a pass, merit or distinction grade. All credits are awarded are awarded at Level 3 which broadly equates to A Level study. Assessment is continuous over the whole year and is based on a number of set pieces of work such as essays, projects, presentations and examinations which will be submitted online.

You will be supported by your tutors for your academic work, and a personal development coach who can support you with career progression.

The course is delivered over 2 days online. Students will be expected to complete pre-lesson and post-lesson tasks and activities to support their learning. Learners are expected to study for 16 hours per week, 8 hours of this will be live lectures and seminars delivered online.

The Access to Higher Education Diploma in Humanities and Social Sciences is widely recognised by UK universities. If you are planning to study a degree course at a specific university, it would be useful to contact them to check that the course you have chosen is in an appropriate subject area and is recognised by the university or college. Please be aware that university entry criteria can change at any time.

At City College Norwich Higher Education, we offer our BA (Hons) Social Sciences degree as a progression from the Access course.
