What You Will Study

You will study the UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Creative Practice over two years. The course is designed to provide post-16 students with the skills, knowledge and understanding necessary to progress into further, higher education and training or employment.

This course delves into game design and development processes, 3D modelling, asset creation, game mechanics and systems design, game narrative design, level design, UI design and game audio production.

The Extended Diploma is graded at Pass, Merit, or Distinction, with the Distinction grade being worth 168 UCAS points (equivalent to 3 full A Levels at A* grade).

Entry Requirements

  • Four GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English language.
  • Your GCSEs must be at least one of the following: art, design, graphics, iMedia or another related creative discipline.

How You Will Be Assessed

The University of the Arts London (UAL) Level 3 Diploma in creative practice is assessed through a series of projects that are designed to broaden your skills, experience and expertise. The projects are multi-disciplinary and require you to work collaboratively and pro-actively with fellow students as well as external clients and stakeholders.

A final end point assessment (commonly referred to as the Final Major Project) decides your overall grade for the year which is graded at: Pass, Merit or Distinction. The first year (Diploma) is allocated the following UCAS points: Pass (36), Merit (60), Distinction (84). The second year (Extended Diploma) is allocated the following UCAS points: Pass (72), Merit (120), Distinction (168). Your work will be internally assessed and scrutinised by external verifiers from the University of the Arts London to ensure that academic standards are adhered to and maintained.

Course Progression

City College Norwich is a member of the University of the Arts London Progression Partnership to promote the recruitment of talented, creative students from high quality further education institutions to UAL higher education degree level courses. We also run a L4 Professional Diploma in Technical and Production Practice 'Indie Game Development' for students wanting an extra year at college to prepare for the demands of university level study or to support your career into the creative industries.

The course team also work with local and national higher education providers such as NUA, London College of Communication and Central St Martins to ensure you are prepared for your next step. We also work collaboratively with local, national and international artists and creative agencies to provide fantastic work experience opportunities.

City College Norwich also has an outstanding apprenticeship team who can provide you will advice and guidance if you wish to follow an apprenticeship route into the industry. If you choose not to pursue a career within the creative industries, this course provides fantastic opportunities to develop collaborative working skills, problem-solving, creative and the higher order evaluative skills demanded by universities and employers.

Where Your Course Can Take You

This course is designed for people who want to make games, whether you're aiming to join a small indie studio, collaborate with others on creative projects or build something of your own from the ground up.

Many of our graduates go on to work in independent game studios, collaborate on passion projects, or start their own ventures. Roles they’ve taken on include:

  • Game developer: building the code that brings ideas to life.
  • 3D artist / Environment Artist: crafting immersive worlds and characters.
  • VFX artist: adding visual flair and polish.
  • Gameplay programmer: making interactions feel smooth and responsive.
  • Game audio designer: creating soundscapes that elevate storytelling.
