What You Will Study

The main role of a Production Chef is to cook food using recipes and menus that are already planned. Some of the ingredients are pre-prepared, and meals are often made in large amounts. In some places, like schools, care homes, or hospitals, the chef may need to cook for people with special dietary needs.

The chef is responsible for making meals using often using a combination of fresh and ready-made ingredients, like fresh salad or frozen pastries. They work in busy kitchens as part of a team and need to be well-organised, energetic, accurate, and pay close attention to detail.

They also need to care about the environment and follow rules for hygiene, health and safety, food safety as very often these roles include caring for the vulnerable groups in society as well as an awareness to fire safety. They must also respect diversity, inclusion, and wellbeing, and follow best practices for sustainability.

  • In order to enrol onto an apprenticeship, you need to be employed in a relevant job role and undertake a range of tasks which would enable you to complete the apprenticeship qualification.

How You Will Be Assessed

Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace and in college. Apprentices will be required to attend college-based sessions as part of their training, whilst also completing off-the-job training in the workplace. You will also complete assessments and observations in the workplace.

At the end of the apprenticeship, the apprentice will be ready for EPA which includes:

  • Practical workplace observation with questions
  • Professional discussion with portfolio of evidence review.

Course Progression

This course should support a learner’s workplace development which may include:

  • Continuation, development or promotion at work or within this sector
  • The skills to further develop a specialism, such as a Pâtissier, Baker, Butcher, or becoming a Team Leader.
  • With further experience, the apprentice may wish to create their own business or pop-up outlet.

Fees

Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.

For employers who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £350.

A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would amount to £7,000.

Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices cannot be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
