Summary
Students will learn the key knowledge, skills and behaviours including Engineering design, materials and hand skills. The course covers essential elements of both theory and practical to give the fundamental knowledge and skills to help to identify next steps into this diverse and rapidly changing career path. Throughout the course students will gain valuable practical experience and learn how to promote themselves in the job market. They will also learn various core skills in teamwork, communication, digital skills and problem solving.
Units of study include:
Unit 101 - Working in Engineering:
- Health & Safety including employer and employee rights and responsibilities with in the workplace
- Environmental impact of industry and work practices
- Maintaining working relationships
- Sectors in Engineering
- Key Engineering materials
- Engineering Information Technology
Unit 102 - Hand Fitting
- Using Engineering information and practical skills to manufacture engineering components using a variety of industry standard tools and equipment
Unit 115 – CAD and Technical Drawing
- Understanding the concepts of conveying and interpreting technical information using industry recognised technical drawing skills.
- Using CAD software and manual techniques to create technical drawings
Students will also continue with core studies Maths and English until they achieve a Grade 4 in each.

Entry Requirements
Applicants should have achieved GCSE Grades 3 and above in both Maths and English, plus two other GCSE grade 2s
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course students will be given the opportunity to progress to the Level 2 Engineering Course, or another Level 2 course within the college.
Objective
As the complexity of all areas of Engineering technology increases, this course is designed to introduce students to the common fundamental elements that will help provide guidance on their next steps.
Assessment
Assessment on the course is through short answer questions, practical workshop exercises and online assessment.
Progression
The Level 1 course is designed to keep students progression options open. They can progress to the Level 2 Engineering or other Level 2 courses within the college including Engineering apprenticeships if the required English and Maths entry points have been met. Students are encouraged to investigated all options to ensure they are working towards their full potential.
Career Progression
Successful students will have the ability to apply for further Full time study or Apprenticeships that will support their progression to employment.
Fees
If you are a UK or home fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course, tuition fees are free. If you are aged 19 and over please contact the Advice Shop In addition to this there will be costs for Uniform of steel toe capped boots, trousers and logo shirt.
