What You Will Study

Are you thinking about a career in health and social care but don’t yet have the experience or qualifications? This free course is the perfect first step.

What you’ll learn:
The course introduces you to the wide range of roles in health and social care, and the key values and skills needed to succeed, such as person-centred care and effective communication.
You’ll work towards the Level 1 Gateway Award in Health and Care, covering two key modules:

  • Principles and Values in Health and Social Care: Learn the core values of care, such as respect, dignity, and confidentiality, and why they are essential in supporting individuals.
  • Service Provision and Roles within Health and Social Care: Explore the different types of care services and job roles, and understand the skills needed to work in the sector.

Who is it for?

  • This course is ideal for anyone new to the sector, especially if you're looking to build confidence, gain basic knowledge, and explore future career options.

Course details:

  • Location: City College Norwich, Ipswich Road campus
  • Introduction Session: Monday 4th August, 10am – 1pm
  • Course Dates: Every Monday and Tuesday, 9:30am – 4pm
  • Duration: From 5th August to 9th September (excludes Monday 25th August 2025)

Entry Requirements

  • This course is open to learners aged 19 and over.
  • You do not need any previous qualifications, learning, or experience to join.
  • However, because of the reading and writing involved in both the learning and assessment, you will need to show basic literacy skills.

How You Will Be Assessed

  • You will be assessed by completing a portfolio of evidence

Where Your Course Can Take You

  • After completing this course, you will be well positioned to apply for entry-level roles in Health and Social Care, such as a Support Worker role. You could also look to progress into a Health and Social Care apprenticeship
