What You Will Study
A Level Art offers the exciting opportunity to explore your creativity, develop your artistic skills, and express unique perspectives. This course is designed for those who are passionate about art and want to delve deeper into artistic techniques, mediums and concepts. It provides a comprehensive foundation in both practical and theoretical aspects of art.
Throughout the course, you will have the opportunity to try new techniques, such as working with paints, printing and mixed media. You will study famous artists and movements and will have the opportunity to build a sketchbook to document your creative journey.
The first term will introduce you to some of the materials you will be working with. You will explore how to use the formal elements of art, alongside how to use specific materials such as charcoal, gouache, oil, etching, lino and mono-printing.

Entry Requirements
- Five GCSE subjects at grade 5 or above including English language and maths.
- Grade 5 or above in a GCSE art-based subject is also required (such as textiles, art, graphics or photography).
- Alternatively, you must present a suitable portfolio of work to be assessed by the course leader at enrolment.
How You Will Be Assessed
Assessment methods include, a range of practical and creative experimentation contained in a sketchbook, an essay investigating the ideas you are exploring in your practical work and a 15 hour long practical exam where you complete a final outcome in response to a theme set by the exam board.
Course Progression
An A Level in art may lead to related courses at a college, art school or university. A Level art opens up a variety of progression routes, such as degree-level study in fine art, graphic design, illustration, fashion, architecture and more. You could also progress onto a foundation art course, an internship or degree apprenticeship.
Where Your Course Can Take You
You may go on to a wide range of careers in art and design and other creative industries. Career options include an illustrator, graphic designer, animator, make-up artist, printmaker or art therapist.
Fees
If you are a UK or home fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course, tuition fees are free. If you are aged 19 and over please contact the Advice Shop
