Summary

The course looks to develop an understanding of a variety of key principles in sport, covering fitness, development and coaching as specific areas of focus. The course is a 2 year programme and you will study a Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport.

The purpose of the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport Coaching and Development is to develop and progress students towards their intended career pathway of working within development and leadership within the sports industry. Bridging any knowledge gaps from finishing GCSEs to their course. The course looks to develop an understanding of a variety of key principles in sport, covering fitness, development, practical sports and coaching as specific areas of focus.

During their academic journey students will be provided with opportunities and experiences which will aid their development and help them engage with those from the industry they are aiming to become part of.

Example Year 1 Units: Anatomy and Physiology (Exam), Fitness Training (Exam), Professional Development, Sports Leadership, Practical Sports Performance, Sports Psychology and Organising and Sports Event.

Example Year 2 Units: Coaching for Performance, Research Methods, Sports Development, Investigating Business (Exam), Skill Acquisition (Exam).

Your timetable will also consist of tutorial sessions, learning support sessions and (if required) English and Maths.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSE’s at grade 4 and above (including English Language and Mathematics).

If you are offered a conditional offer this will be on the grounds of completing the following:

  • Completion of tasks (sent out following a taster session/interview)
  • Two complete references (School and Sports Coach/PE Teacher)

If you are a progressing Level 2 student, you will be required to have finished your Level 2 with a Merit overall (with your Anatomy and Physiology exam at a minimum of a Level 2 Pass) and must have passed either GCSE Maths or English Language.

The courses is assessed in a variety of ways, which include:
4 x External Exams over the course (2 in year 1, and 2 in year 2)
Written Assignments
Observations
Presentations
Interviews

Progression

On successful completion of your Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, options could include study a degree at a University or College. City College Norwich offers a BSc (Hons) Sport, Health and Exercise Science.

Career Progression

The sport and active leisure industry supports over 450,000 jobs in the UK. Over the last five years it has become a £20 billion industry and experts predict it will continue to grow faster than other sectors in the economy.

This course will allow you to progress onto many careers which include sport and exercise scientist or psychology, a gym instructor or leisure centre assistant, personal trainer, sport development, sports nutrition and sports physiotherapist. Some of these careers will require further study at degree level. If you are looking for a career in non-sports physiotherapy this may be a suitable pathway but check with your university or college of choice.

Fees

If you are a UK or home fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course, tuition fees are free. If you are aged 19 and over fees may be payable.

There will be costs for uniform approximately £100 and trips associated with your course TBC.
