Summary

An Assistant Accountant provides support to internal and external customers and will work mainly as an Assistant Accountant within practice or alternatively within the Finance function of an organisation. An Assistant Accountant helps in the operation of day-to-day financial activities. These may include data entry to month- end management accounts and year- end financial statements. In this qualification, apprentices will master more complex disciplines including financial accounting, preparing financial statements, management accounting techniques, tax purposes for business and business awareness for accountants.

Course content includes:

  • Understanding the transactional processes and support provided by accountancy firms or the accounting function within an organisation.
  • Understanding how to enter accounting transactions, perform a reconciliation, correct errors and produce a range of reports using a computerised accounting system.
  • Understanding the relevant ethical standards to protect their own and the organisation's professional reputation and integrity.

You will complete the Level 3 Assistant Accountant apprenticeship.

  • This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and off the job training.
  • You will also develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
  • You must have an employer to support your apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant job role.
  • The typical length of this apprenticeship course is 15 months.
  • This course has multiple entry points.

Entry Requirements

  • GCSE grades 9 – 4 (A – C) in English and Maths or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths.
  • If in exceptional circumstances a learner has not achieved English or Maths at Level 2 (4/C or above at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2), they will have to attend Functional Skills sessions which will be held on an additional day to their regular college attendance.
  • Applicants must also hold Level 2 AAT or Level 2 AAT Bookkeeping in order to enrol onto this Level 3 apprenticeship.

In order to enrol onto an apprenticeship, you need to be employed in a relevant job role and undertake a range of tasks which would enable you to complete the qualification.

Learning Outcomes

For the full apprenticeship, candidates will complete:

  • Level 3 Assistant Accounting Apprenticeship Standard
  • Level 3 AAT Diploma in Accounting

Assessment

The End Point Assessment (EPA) includes:

  • 90- minute knowledge test containing 40 questions (extra 60 minutes available for preparation time)
  • 60- minute professional discussion underpinned by the portfolio of evidence

Progression

On successful completion you could progress onto a Level 4 Professional Accounting/ Taxation Technician apprenticeship. Alternatively, you could progress further through study of other qualifications or business-related courses.

Career Progression

As well as ensuring full competency as an Assistant Accountant, this standard provides options for progression into a number of career paths in the Accounting sector including Audit Trainee, Corporate Recovery Analyst, Credit Controller or Tax Accountant.

Fees

April 2024, Apprenticeship

Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
 
For employers with less than 50 employees who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £600.
 
For an employer with more than 50 employees a 5% charge will be implemented regardless of the age of the apprentice which in this case would be £600.
 
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £12,000.
 
Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
