Apprentice Engineering Technician – Drainage & Flood Risk (L6)

PDC Engineering

Snetterton, NR16 2JU

Job Description

Apprentice Engineering Technician – Drainage & Flood Risk

We are looking for an Engineering Technician to join our Flood Risk and Drainage Team and work on real projects that help shape sustainable development, drainage systems, and flood risk management solutions. This is an excellent opportunity for someone sixth form/college or starting their career who is interested in engineering and wants to develop practical skills in a supportive and professional working environment.

This role will be offered as an apprenticeship, giving you the opportunity to work while studying towards a recognised qualification in Civil Engineering, typically one day per week with a local training provider. The role is mainly office-based and will involve helping to prepare technical drawings, reports, and general project support. You will work closely with our experienced technical team, who will support you as you learn and develop your skills.

You will also assist with gathering important site information at the early stages of projects, such as flood mapping, drainage constraints, and environmental considerations, helping us understand flood risk issues and how developments can be designed safely and effectively.

On successful completion of the apprenticeship, there will be opportunities to progress within the company and continue developing your engineering career.

Key Responsibilities
• Prepare drawings and drainage models using AutoCAD, InfoDrainage and other design tools.
• Support engineers in the development of flood risk assessments, drainage strategies including sustainable drainage systems (SuDS).
• Assist with the preparation of technical reports and supporting documents.
• Develop knowledge across a range of flood risk and drainage engineering disciplines.
• Interpret drawings and assist with basic calculations.
• Assist in the production of flood maps and drainage constraint information to support early project assessments.
• Liaise with team members across the business as required.
• Develop project management skills to support project delivery and deadlines.
• Follow company quality procedures and health & safety standards.

What We’re Looking For

Essential
• A positive attitude and willingness to learn.
• Good computer skills.
• Eagerness to develop technical skills and build a career in engineering.
• Good written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to work accurately to deadlines.
• Ability to think logically and mathematically.
• Good problem-solving skills.
• Organised, proactive, and confident working both independently and as part of a team.
• Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle, with the ability to travel to our Snetterton office and project sites as required.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, particularly Word and Excel and PowerPoint.
• Level 3 qualifications in relevant subjects.

Desirable
• Studying towards, recently completed, or interested in studying a qualification in Civil Engineering or related subject.
• Basic knowledge of (or willingness to learn) software such as AutoCAD and InfoDrainage.
• Some awareness of flood risk, drainage, environmental, or engineering projects (through studies, work experience, or placements).

Personal Qualities

This is a great opportunity for someone who is interested in working on real-world projects that balance the natural and built environment, and who enjoys maths, design, environmental challenges, and problem solving. It is ideal for someone who wants to start a career in engineering while gaining hands-on experience and studying towards a qualification at the same time.

This role is ideal for someone who will be finishing their Level 3 qualifications this summer. The position is planned to start in September 2026 onwards, allowing time for exams to be completed while giving you the opportunity to move straight into full-time employment and begin an apprenticeship in Civil Engineering. We will also consider applicants who are available to start immediately.

Please note that this is a Degree Apprenticeship position. PDC does not mandate a specific apprenticeship provider; instead, successful candidates will work with PDC to identify and select the provider that best meets their needs and the requirements of the programme.
