What You Will Study

Courses start each September, and run on Tuesdays from 1.45pm to 5pm or 2pm to 5.15pm (to be confirmed closer to the start date).

You will study:
Roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training (RPL of L3 AET)
Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training
Delivering education and training
Assessing learners in education and training
Using resources for education and training
Teaching in a specialist area

In addition, we include a focus on course leadership, curriculum design and evaluation.

You will study over one year, during term-time. We recommend you spend an additional three hours per week on individual study in order to be successful on the programme. Once enrolled, you will have access to our online learning environment, with access to resources to support your studies, and information about progression opportunities on successful completion.

Entry Requirements

You must be aged 19 or over. You should have a (minimum Level 3) subject-qualification (or Level 6 if you teach a degree-level subject)

There are expectations around English and maths qualifications at Level 2 for teachers in the sector. For this programme you will be asked to evidence your Level 2 English and maths qualifications at a pass level, or evidence of a Level 2 English qualification at a pass level and BKSB maths at a minimum Level 2.

Because we offer the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (L4 CET) with some additional content, we require all applicants to already hold a Level 3 Award in Education and Training (L3 AET) or equivalent, and will use the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process to credit this against a Unit in the L4 CET programme.

Once we receive your application, we will share details of an initial assessment task, which you will complete in a written format, our pre-interview questionnaire, a self-evaluation of digital skills, and you will be invited to attend a 1:1 interview. Offers of places on the programme follow successful completion of these activities, and confirmation of an appropriate mentor. Mentors must hold a minimum of a Level 4 teaching qualification, and be a subject-specialist. Please apply at least four months before the programme start-date (or by the internal deadline for applicants who are CCN staff members).

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be assessed through:

  • short written-assignments and reflections
  • observations of your teaching practice
    • performance and product-evidence from your teaching practice

Assessment occurs incrementally throughout the programme, you should expect to be submitting work for summative assessment ~monthly.

Assessment is against unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria, and the demonstration of Level 4 academic writing skills, including using and acknowledging published sources of material (referencing).

Course Progression

On successful completion of the programme, subject to employed job-roles and qualifications in English and maths, you may also be interested in completing:

  • Level 3 Assessor qualifications/Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance qualifications (completed over four months to one year depending upon the number of units taken)

Where Your Course Can Take You

This course could support you to progress further in a teaching/training role in the FE or voluntary sector; depending upon the job role and employer, there might also be expectations that you complete further teaching/teaching-related qualification(s) as you progress.

Fees

This is a full-cost course, which means:
-there are no reductions in tuition fees if you are unemployed or in receipt of benefit;
- we operate a strict no refund policy, and you will be liable for the entire fee, even if you withdraw from the course. As this is a short-course, fees must be paid in full, in advance of starting the programme.
-there is no access to funded student support. If you have an additional learning need, please discuss this with us when you apply so that we can help you to decide whether the routine support that our teaching team can offer would meet your support needs, and/or whether you would need to make arrangements independently for additional support.
