What You Will Study
Learn the foundations of pattern cutting on this practical 6-week course, commencing 2nd June at 6pm. This is ideal for beginners and anyone interested in garment making, and will teach you how to take accurate body measurements, and draft your own personalised top and sleeve block for garments that fit properly.
Week 1: Introduction to tools, terminology and measuring techniques, and beginning your personal top block.
Week 2: Developing the top block, drafting and adapting the sleeve, and understanding fit and balance.
Week 3: Cutting and sewing a calico toile to test fit and introducing basic fitting techniques.
Week 4: Assessing fit on the body, making adjustments, and transferring changes back to the pattern.
Week 5: Introduction to pattern manipulation including dart movement and adapting the block into different styles.
Week 6: Developing your own designs, exploring further manipulation techniques, and planning next steps for independent projects.
By the end of the course, you will have your own made-to-measure block and a strong understanding of pattern cutting principles. You will also have gained confidence in drafting, fitting and adapting patterns, giving you the skills to begin designing and making your own garments independently.
