What You Will Study

You will develop your everyday maths skills in a supportive ESOL-friendly classroom where you can grow your confidence using numbers in real-life situations.

You will focus on practical maths that you will use at home, at work and in the community, while improving the language you need to understand maths vocabulary and instructions.

You will learn in small groups alongside other adult ESOL learners, which will give you the chance to practise speaking and listening while you solve problems together. You will take part in activities that help you understand maths words, symbols and questions so that you feel confident using maths in English.

You will study topics such as using whole numbers, understanding money, reading timetables, measuring for cooking or household tasks, and recognising shapes and simple data. Your tutor will help you build the step-by-step skills you need to progress to Entry Level Functional Skills Maths or Essential Skills Maths in the future.

Modules you may study include:

  • Understanding everyday maths vocabulary
  • Using whole numbers in practical situations
  • Money, budgeting and shopping
  • Time, timetables and planning journeys
  • Measuring length, weight and capacity
  • Shape, space and simple data
  • Problem-solving for real-life tasks.

Entry Requirements

  • You will need to be enrolled on an ESOL programme at City College Norwich or be assessed as needing additional support with maths alongside your ESOL studies. You will complete a short initial assessment to ensure you join the right Entry Level class.
  • You will not need any previous formal maths qualifications.
  • You will need to attend an interview or advice session before joining.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be assessed through in-class activities, short quizzes, group tasks and practical problem-solving. You will receive regular feedback from your tutor to help you understand your progress and identify areas you want to improve.

There is no formal exam for this course, and you will complete learning tasks at a pace that suits your level.

Course Progression

You will be able to progress to the next Entry Level of ESOL Maths or, when ready, move on to:

  • Functional Skills Maths Entry Level
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 1
  • Functional Skills Maths Level 2
