What You Will Study

You will learn key knowledge, skills, and behaviours, including engineering design, materials, and hand skills. The course covers essential elements of both theory and practical work to give you the fundamental knowledge and skills to help identify your next steps in this diverse and rapidly changing career path. Throughout the course, you will gain valuable practical experience and learn how to promote yourself in the job market. You will also develop core skills in teamwork, communication, digital literacy, and problem solving.

You will learn in our state-of-the-art ACE Centre (Advanced Construction and Engineering) featuring the latest machinery and tools to train you in the advanced technical skills needed as part of the move to sustainable, low-carbon technologies. Our sustainable transport workshop will allow you to work on electric and hybrid vehicles, using computer aided design suites, and the latest lathes and milling machines. Our mechanical engineering facilities include the machining, diagnostic and testing equipment and tools you will find used in industry - we also have hand fitting workshops to teach the fundamentals of quality component production by hand.

Unit 101 – Working in Engineering

  • Health & Safety, including your rights and responsibilities as an employer or employee in the workplace
  • Environmental impact of industry and work practices
  • Maintaining working relationships
  • Sectors in Engineering
  • Key engineering materials
  • Engineering Information Technology

Unit 102 – Hand Fitting

  • Using engineering information and practical skills to manufacture components with a variety of industry-standard tools and equipment

Unit 115 – Computer Aided Design (CAD) and Technical Drawing

  • Understanding how to convey and interpret technical information using industry-recognised technical drawing skills
  • Using CAD software and manual techniques to create technical drawings

Entry Requirements

You will need to achieve four GCSEs at grade 3 or above, including English language and maths.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be assessed in a variety of ways, including short answer questions, practical workshop exercises, and online assessments, giving you the chance to demonstrate both your knowledge and hands-on skills.

Course Progression

You could progress to study Engineering Level 2 at college, or consider an Apprenticeship or T Level. Our engineering courses are designed to equip you with the knowledge, skills, and behaviours needed for success, enabling you to progress through our course levels, advance to an Apprenticeship or Higher Education, and ultimately excel in your chosen field within the industry. You could study HNC Electrical and Electronic Engineering or HNC Mechanical Engineering through City College Norwich Higher Education.

Fees

If you are a UK or home fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course, tuition fees are free. If you are aged 19 and over please contact the Advice Shop In addition to this there will be costs for Uniform of steel toe capped boots, trousers and logo shirt.
