What should I expect at a careers interview?
27th October 2025
Whether you’re considering university, an apprenticeship, work, or something completely different, booking a careers interview is a great way to start planning your next steps!
Careers appointments are your chance to explore options, ask questions, and are there to help feel more confident about your next steps. They are also confidential, supportive, and all about helping you make informed choices about your future.
So, what should you expect in a careers interview? During the appointment, you will meet with a qualified Careers Adviser who will listen, ask questions, and help you explore what’s right for you. Together, you will look at your interests, skills, qualifications, and goals to create an action plan that makes sense for your future.
How can I prepare?
1. Think ahead
Before attending your appointment, think about what you would like to get out of it. Perhaps you feel unsure about your next steps, or want to check you’re on the right track?
2. Talk it through
Two brains are more powerful than one! It’s always helpful to talk to family members, carers, or a trusted adult about your ideas — together, you can brainstorm what you might like to ask at your appointment
3. Bring your CV
Don’t worry if your CV isn’t perfect! Bringing your CV along helps us see your experience, and we can even help by making some practical suggestions!
4. Try a few quizzes
We don’t know about you, but we love a quiz! Careers quizzes are the perfect tool to help you discover new job ideas and to understand your strengths. Here are some of our favourites:
- Home | Discover your skills and careers | National Careers Service
- Career Planner | What job should I do? | Prospects.ac.uk
- Quiz: What career is right for me? - BBC Bitesize
