What You Will Study

This is an introductory qualification for people in roles in Further Education colleges, independent training providers, local authorities or voluntary organisations, who are involved in teaching/training and have a particular focus on assessing. You can progress from this course into the portfolio-building stage of a Level 3 Assessor qualification (subject to the relevant job role).

The course starts in January each year, and runs on Thursdays evenings from 4.45pm to 8pm.

You will study:
Roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
Facilitating learning and development for individuals/in groups
Understanding the principles and practices of assessment

You will study over 16 weeks term-time. Because this is a short programme of study, you are advised against applying for a programme where you could not commit to attending all sessions. We recommend you spend an additional three hours per week on individual study in order to be successful on the programme. Once enrolled, you will have access to our online learning environment, with access to resources to support your studies, and information about progression opportunities on successful completion.

Entry Requirements

You must be aged 19 or over. Typically, you will have a (minimum Level 3) qualification in a particular subject relevant to the sector, and which you teach (or assess)/intend to teach (or assess).

There are expectations around English and maths qualifications at Level 2 for staff in the Sector. For this programme you will be asked to evidence your Level 2 English and maths qualifications at a pass level, or to complete an assessment of your skills in English and maths at Level 2 online.

Once we receive your application, we will share details of an initial assessment task, which you will complete in a written format, our pre-interview questionnaire, a self-evaluation of digital skills, and you will be invited to attend a 1:1 or group interview. Offers of places on the programme follow successful completion of these activities. Please apply at least two months before your preferred start-date.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be assessed through:

  • Short written-assignments, which include a focus both on theoretical understanding, and on your facilitation/assessment practice - these occur frequently throughout the programme; you should expect to submitting work for assessment every month.
  • An observation of your practice facilitating learning in an appropriate environment

Assessment is against unit learning outcomes and assessment criteria, and the demonstration of Level 3 academic writing skills, including using and acknowledging published sources of material (referencing).

Course Progression

On successful completion of the programme, subject to employed job-roles and qualifications in English and maths, you may be able to progress onto:

  • Level 3 Assessor qualifications/Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance qualifications (completed over four months to one year depending upon the number of units taken)
  • Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training

Where Your Course Can Take You

This course could support you to progress into Assessor or Internal Quality Assurer role(s) in the FE or voluntary sector; depending upon the job role and employer, there might also be expectations that you complete further teaching/teaching-related qualification(s) as you progress.

Fees

This is a full-cost course, which means:

-there are no reductions in tuition fees if you are unemployed or in receipt of benefit;
- we operate a strict no refund policy, and you will be liable for the entire fee, even if you withdraw from the course. As this is a short-course, fees must be paid in full, in advance of starting the programme.
-there is no access to funded student support. If you have an additional learning need, please discuss this with us when you apply so that we can help you to decide whether the routine support that our teaching team can offer would meet your support needs, and/or whether you would need to make arrangements independently for additional support.
