What You Will Study

Learn the essential skills of filmmaking through a balance of short theory sessions and practical hands-on work.

You will gain confidence using a camera, composing shots, shaping simple visual narratives, recording sound, planning shoots, and editing footage to create flow and atmosphere. By the end of the course, you will have produced a finished one to three minute short film that reflects yourcreative ideas and technical development.

What you will cover:

• Week 1 – Tools and Filmmaking Basics: Introduction to essential equipment and how filming works. Practical exercises to get comfortable handling the camera.
• Week 2 – Composition and Subject Movement: How to frame a shot and follow a subject with purpose. Practical shooting tasks to apply framing and movement.
• Week 3 – Narrative and Visual Storytelling: How simple stories are built and communicated visually. Practical exercise: shoot a short scene that tells a story without dialogue.
• Week 4 – Sound and Atmosphere: Understanding how sound shapes mood. Practical recording and layering of dialogue, ambience, and atmospheric sound.
• Week 5 – Planning and Shooting: How to plan a scene before filming. Practical task: create a shot list and begin filming the final short piece.
• Week 6 – Editing and Finalising: Editing for rhythm and flow. Practical task: finish and refine your one to three minute film for presentation.

You will be required to bring along a DSLR/Mirrorless Camera/camera phone.

This course will run on Tuesday evenings from 6pm to 8pm.
