What You Will Study

Functional Skills in English is a part-time course for students over 19. If you want to develop your English but aren't ready for GCSEs yet, then Functional Skills is a good starting point.

We offer Level 1 and Level 2 English Functional Skills qualifications, both of which will help you to develop a range of reading, writing and communicating skills.

The Functional Skills English qualifications at Level 1 and Level 2 are designed to develop the practical communication skills needed for everyday life, work and further study. The courses focus on three key areas: reading, writing and speaking, listening and communicating.

You will learn to read and understand a range of texts, identifying key ideas, perspectives and purposes, and at Level 2 you will develop the ability to analyse and compare information in greater depth. In writing, you will produce clear and purposeful texts for different audiences, such as emails, reports and articles, while improving accuracy in spelling, punctuation and grammar. The speaking, listening and communicating component will build confidence in presenting information, contributing to discussions, and responding appropriately to others.

Overall, these courses will equip you with essential literacy, communication and critical thinking skills that support progression into further education, apprenticeships and employment.

These courses are delivered over 18 weeks: September to January and February to July.

This is an intensive course that is delivered as a weekly, three-hour face-to-face session with the additional expectation of two hours of self study and homework each week.

Entry Requirements

Successful completion of initial assessments.

How You Will Be Assessed

City and Guilds Functional Skills English qualifications at Level 1 and Level 2 are assessed through a combination of externally set examinations and internally assessed components, designed to reflect real-life communication tasks. Learners complete assessments in reading and writing, which are externally set and marked, alongside a speaking, listening and communicating task, which is assessed by the centre.

Assessments can be taken either online (on-screen) or paper-based, providing flexibility to meet different learner needs, and are available on demand throughout the year, allowing you to take the assessments when you are ready. The reading test evaluates the ability to understand, interpret and analyse texts, while the writing assessment requires you to produce clear, purposeful responses for different audiences with accurate spelling, punctuation and grammar. The speaking, listening and communicating element involves presentations and discussions, assessing your ability to communicate ideas effectively and respond to others.

Course Progression

You may progress from Level 1 to Level 2 Functional Skills English in the same academic year. You could also go on to study GCSEs or other higher level study.

Where Your Course Can Take You

Students who achieve City and Guilds Functional Skills English at Level 1 or Level 2 gain valuable skills that support progression into further education, apprenticeships and employment. These qualifications are widely recognised by employers, colleges and training providers, and at Level 2 are often accepted as equivalent to a GCSE grade 4 (standard pass) in many contexts. You can use the qualification to access a wide range of vocational courses, secure apprenticeship placements, or meet entry requirements for further study. The strong communication, literacy and interpersonal skills developed through the course are highly valued across industries such as business, healthcare, education, retail and public services, helping students to succeed in the workplace and progress in their chosen careers.
