What You Will Study
Civil Engineering Technicians provide support to engineers and other construction professionals in the design, delivery and maintenance of the built environment and infrastructure schemes. They need to be highly skilled, versatile, motivated and able to work confidently across a range of technical roles.
This course provides a range of experiences including theory and practical sessions, supported by visits to local construction sites and talks from industry professionals. The senior civil engineering technician standard is particularly suitable for those who already have experience in a technician or site engineering role.
You will complete the Level 4 Civil Engineering Senior Technician Standard:
- This apprenticeship will involve college attendance and off the job training.
- You will also develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours.
- You need to have an employer to support your apprenticeship and be employed in a relevant job role.
- The typical length of this apprenticeship is 24- 36 months.
- The next intake is in September 2025 and will be based at City College Norwich, one day per week.
You will complete the Pearson BTEC Pearson Level 4 HNC in Civil Engineering. For the full specification, please visit https://qualifications.pearson.com/en/qualifications/btec-higher-nationals/civil-engineering-2023.html

Entry Requirements
You will need GCSE grade 4/C in Maths and English (Language or Literature) or Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English.
If in exceptional circumstances you have not achieved English or Maths at Level 2 (4/C or above at GCSE or Functional Skills Level 2), you will have to attend Functional Skills sessions which will be held on an additional day to your regular college attendance.
In order to enrol onto an apprenticeship, you need to be employed in a relevant job role and undertake a range of tasks which would enable you to complete the apprenticeship qualification.
You should also hold at least one qualification from the list below:
- BTEC Level 3 qualification in construction or another related Level 3 qualification
- A Level profile that demonstrates strong performance in a relevant subject or adequate performance in more than one GCE subject.
- Access to Higher Education Diploma from an approved further education institution
- An international equivalent to the above qualifications
Mature students with relevant industrial background may also be considered, subject to interview.
How You Will Be Assessed
The Pearson HNC is a mix of assignments, project work and some exams. Training and assessments are delivered in the workplace and in college. You will be required to attend college-based sessions as part of your training, while also completing off-the-job training in the workplace. You will also complete assessments and observations in the workplace. A portfolio of evidence will need to be completed as part of the apprenticeship throughout the course.
Apprentices without Level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level prior to taking the End Point Assessment (EPA).
At the end of the qualification, you will be ready for the EPA which includes:
Assessment method 1 - technical project report and presentation with questioning
Assessment method 2 - professional discussion underpinned by a portfolio of evidence
The result from each assessment method is combined to decide the overall apprenticeship grade. The following grades are available for the apprenticeship: fail, pass, distinction.
Success at EPA can lead to EngTech accreditation with the Institute of Civil Engineers.
Course Progression
Successful apprentices may wish to explore further study and progression onto HND courses or a degree in Civil Engineering.
Where Your Course Can Take You
This programme is widely recognised by employers and professional bodies. On completion of the apprenticeship, you will have satisfied the requirements for registration as an Engineering Technician by the relevant professional engineering institution in accordance with the requirements of the Engineering Council as the registration body. You may choose to pursue professional qualifications with the ICE to achieve Chartered status.
Fees
September 2025, Apprenticeship, Day
Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.
For employers with less than 50 employees who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £450.
A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £9,000.
Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.
To discuss apprenticeship course fees in more detail or for more information on recruiting an apprentice, please contact 01603 773365 or Apprenticeships@ccn.ac.uk.
