How to perfect your CV and get that job!

27th October 2025

If you're struggling to secure that part-time job, look no further! We're here to lend a hand, and to offer some unmissable tips and tricks on how to write that all-important CV!

Finding a part-time job alongside your studies is not always easy, especially as there’s a lot of competition out there! We also know how important having that extra cash can be, especially as it gives you the first real chance to be more financially independent. Getting a part-time job is also a great way to gain experience in the working world, and will help you to build confidence.

Please don't worry if you have yet to secure a job, as we've got some good news for you! The run-up to Christmas is actually the perfect time to be looking for a job, as this time of year is busy for lots of retail and hospitality industries who will often be looking for extra staff.

However, just because a busy time of year is approaching, it doesn’t always mean that a quick scan on a job site will be enough to secure that job! Some organisations don’t always advertise all their vacancies on that website, and so we always recommend doing a bit of extra research for vacancies on companies’ websites. This is because you can see all jobs advertised in one place and apply through an online recruitment system. It’s also worth popping into larger retail stores for application forms as some prefer to still recruit in that way. Leaving your CV with organisations’ HR departments might also get you a chance of an interview, but you will need to make sure that your CV is up to date and is adapted to whatever job you are applying for.

Another great way to explore jobs is through our own website! Paid and volunteering opportunities are available to browse here: Student Job Vacancies at City College Norwich

AI: do or don’t use?

Using AI to create a CV can be dangerous, as many organisations can detect this using special software. However, if used in the right way, it can be a really useful tool to help draft a CV, or to help you to prepare for an interview.

How can I create a successful CV?

  1. Keep it concise: we know it’s hard to not get carried away, but one page is plenty for a student CV!
  2. Tailor your CV: don’t just use the same wording for every application! If you can adjust your CV to each job your apply for, using keywords from the job description, you will be much more likely to smash it!
  3. Proofread: spelling and grammar really do matter! It’s always a good idea to ask somebody to check your CV for you before you apply.
  4. Be honest: don’t exaggerate your experience. Confidence is great, but honesty builds trust.

Parents: how can you support your young person?

  1. Encourage balance: help your young person to manage their time so that work doesn’t affect their studies.
  2. Review their CV together: you can support by offering feedback and help with formatting.
  3. Celebrate their efforts: whether they get the job or not, applying for a job is a learning experience for your young person - that’s an achievement in itself!
