NSFT
Going the extra mile to support NSFT’s mental health practice apprentices
Supporting apprentices to successfully manage the demands of combing work and study, while dealing with the normal day-to-day challenges of a busy job role, depends on effective mentorship and having a really good understanding of each apprentice’s individual needs and challenges.
This is something that the Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) has been doing successfully for its Mental Health Practice Assistant Practitioners.
Craig Edwards, Apprenticeship Programme Facilitator, ensures that every apprentice feels valued and supported. Personalised support is provided through one-on-one mentoring sessions, additional training workshops where required, and simply being available for a conversation.
This includes attending joint face to face sessions with City College Norwich regularly throughout the programme to ensure he can make personal connections with the apprentices and teaching team, as well as being available remotely if needed.
The apprentices are encouraged to set ambitious goals and Craig ensures they have the resources and encouragement needed to achieve them, often attending progress reviews on behalf of NSFT.
A proactive approach to problem-solving has also been key to creating a smooth and supportive learning environment for apprentices.
For example, Craig worked with the college to develop a pre-apprenticeship functional skills programme that helps potential new apprentices prepare for their course.
These efforts have resulted in numerous apprentices not only completing their programmes successfully but also excelling in their subsequent careers, including progressing on to nursing.
‘Craig has shown exceptional dedication, support strategies, and genuine care for the apprentices,’ says Alex Guy, HE Curriculum Lead at City College Norwich. ‘He continuously champions apprenticeships and his contributions have not only enhanced the apprenticeship programme but have also left a lasting positive impact on the lives of many apprentices.’
The positive impact that Craig and the wider NSFT team are making for their apprentices was recognised at City College Norwich’s Apprenticeship Awards, where he was presented with the Contribution to Apprenticeships Award.
