What You Will Study

The City and Guilds Training, Assessing and Quality Assurance qualification scheme (TAQA) offers qualifications to train assessors and those carrying out quality assurance of those assessments (internal and external verifiers). They replace the City and Guilds V1/V2 awards.

Each of these qualification routes include the knowledge and understanding unit: Understanding the principles and practices of quality assuring internal assessment. This unit can be completed as a standalone award if you simply want to get an overview of the IQA process without acting as an IQA.

Depending on your role you could also choose from the following qualification routes:

  • Level 4 Award in the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice - for practitioners who conduct internal quality assurance of the assessment process from within a centre by sample planning, monitoring and advising on the practice of assessors. This involves the study of two units.
  • Level 4 Certificate in Leading the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice - for practitioners who lead the internal quality assurance process within a centre and have responsibility for managing the quality of the assessment process, practice and the performance of assessors. This involves the study of three units.

Courses start (subject to change) in October, February and March each year. Typically the IQA qualification takes up to one year to complete.

Entry Requirements

You need have occupational competence in the area you are quality assuring. This is usually demonstrated through holding a qualification at Level 3 or above in the area of work you wish to quality assure.

You will need to be a qualified assessor with substantial experience of assessing. You will need access to at least two assessors to evidence quality assurance of their practice, and to work alongside a qualified Internal Quality Assurer to countersign your decisions.

If you are new to quality assuring or hope to become an quality assurer but are not yet able to complete quality assurance activities, you are able to complete the underpinning knowledge and understanding unit, in the qualification Level 4 Award in Understanding the Internal Quality Assurance of Assessment Processes and Practice; for this qualification you will not need access to assessors to IQA.

We use an initial assessment process to establish if applicants have the appropriate literacy and numeracy skills required for the qualification; we may ask you to provide evidence of English and maths qualifications and/or to complete an online initial assessment.

How You Will Be Assessed

Assessment will be through a variety of methods including assignments, professional discussion, observation, witness testimony and gathering of evidence from your IQA practice(s) to develop an online evidence portfolio.

Course Progression

You could progress onto other qualifications such as Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or to coaching/mentoring qualifications.

Where Your Course Can Take You

Acquisition of additional qualifications could lead to internal progression in the workplace.
