What You Will Study

This is an introductory qualification for people interested in teaching and training in further education colleges, independent training providers, local authorities and voluntary organisations.

You do not need to be working in a teaching role to complete this course.

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training will give an insight into:

  • The roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • Inclusive teaching and learning approaches
  • Planning and preparing lessons
  • How to assess and give constructive feedback
  • Assessment and record keeping

The teaching programme is 13 weeks long and is delivered in sessions of three hours per week during the relevant college terms. We usually recommend that students will need to match the attendance time with individual study to be successful on the programme (e.g. study for an additional three hours per week). Once enrolled, you will have access to an online learning environment with access to resources to support your studies, and information about your progression opportunities after the programme.

Courses start each September, January, and March/April; and we offer both daytime and evening cohorts at each of the three start-points. The evening programme in January may include some live online learning.

For the cohorts starting in September and January - our daytime programmes run on Tuesdays from 9am to 12.15pm. Our evening programmes run on Thursdays between 5pm and 8.15pm.

For the cohorts starting in March - our daytime programme runs on Thursday from 9am to 12.15pm. Our evening programme runs on Wednesday from 5pm to 8.15pm.

Entry Requirements

There is no requirement for you to be teaching at present or to have previous teaching or training experience. Preferably you will have a subject specialism which you intend to consider teaching in the future; it is an advantage to have had some experience of classroom or training environments, but not a necessity.

You must be aged 19 or over.

It is desirable that candidates looking to teach in Further Education have:

  • A qualification or considerable experience in the subject you intend to teach, usually at Level 3 standard
  • Literacy and numeracy skills at Level 2, GCSE A*-C or the equivalent

How You Will Be Assessed

The qualification will be assessed by:

  • Seven short assignments (approximately 500 – 700 words in length). Assignments are incremental throughout the course; so you should expect to be submitting assignments every two weeks.
  • A short teaching session (15-20 minutes micro teach) to other students and your tutor

As the assessment of this course is through written assignments, you are expected to research and complete work in their own time.

Course Progression

On successful completion of the programme, subject to job-roles and qualifications in English and maths, you may be able to progress onto:

  • Level 3 Assessor qualifications/Level 4 Internal Quality Assurance qualifications (completed over four months to one year depending upon units taken within different qualifications)
  • Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (one year)

Where Your Course Can Take You

You can progress onto a variety of teaching or training roles in a variety of organisations such further education colleges, independent training providers, local authorities and voluntary organisations. Many of these organisations might also require you to progress onto a further teaching qualification such as those detailed.
