What You Will Study

There are different pathways within the assessor qualification suite. The theory unit is taught first, and attendance is expected in college at taught sessions for six evenings in the first four months of the qualification.

Evening sessions run on Thursdays from 4.45pm to 8pm. After completion of the theory unit, you will progress (as is relevant to your qualification pathway) to the portfolio-building stage and will be supported 1:1 by a tutor/assessor; attendance at college, and observation by the assessor at your place of work will be negotiated.

For practitioners who assess knowledge and/or skills in vocationally-related subject areas, you need to use a minimum of three of the following assessment methods: assessments in simulated environments, skills tests, oral and written questions, assignments, projects, case studies and RPL. This may take place in training workshops, classrooms or other learning environments.

For practitioners who assess competence in the workplace you need to use the following assessment methods: observation in a work environment, examining products of work, questioning the learner/professional discussion. You may also use discussion, witness testimonies, looking at learner statements or RPL.

Courses start (subject to change) in October, February and March each year. Typically the assessor qualification takes up to one year to complete.

Entry Requirements

You need to have occupational competence in the area you wish to assess. This is usually demonstrated through holding a qualification at Level 3 or above in the area of work you wish to assess. You will normally need access to at least two candidates to complete assessment practice in order to gain the qualification. You will need to be working with another assessor who can countersign your decisions. If you are new to assessing or hope to become an assessor but are not yet able to carry out real assessments you are able to complete the underpinning knowledge and understanding unit, Level 3 Award in Understanding the Principles and Practices of Assessment on its own and will not need access to candidates to assess.

We use an initial assessment process to establish if applicants have the appropriate literacy and numeracy skills required for the qualification; we may ask you to provide evidence of English and maths qualifications and/or to complete an online initial assessment.

How You Will Be Assessed

Assessment will be through a variety of methods including assignments, observation, witness testimony and gathering of evidence from your assessment practice(s) to develop an online evidence portfolio.

Course Progression

You could progress onto other qualifications such as City and Guilds Level 4 in Internal Qualification, City and Guilds Level 3 Award in Education and Training, or to coaching/mentoring qualifications.

Where Your Course Can Take You

You could progress into a number of careers including assessment in the workplace, or in a learning environment.
