What You Will Study

First Steps into Counselling – Soft Skills is a non-accredited, six-week self-reflective and interactive programme which introduces students to the role of the counsellor and to the key attitudes, values, approaches, and skills important for those aspiring to progress into counselling work. It focuses on self-reflection and practical activities that support students to enhance their professional and personal relationships in all areas of life. The skills learnt will help students to become better listeners, be more empathetic, develop an understanding of emotional intelligence and build confidence to move forwards into further counselling training.

This course will be of benefit for anyone hoping to increase self-understanding, communication and interpersonal skills for work and life. It will be particularly beneficial for those working in roles involving teaching, caring, advice and support, health and social care, customer services and customer relations. Students on this course will learn enhanced interpersonal and communication skills focused on building supportive relationships. They will learn about the role of the counsellor, counselling theory focused around the person-centred approach, and the therapeutic relationship.

On complettion of the course, you should be able to -

  • Have a better understanding and control of your own emotional state.
  • Better support to others who are experiencing emotional difficulties.
  • Improved ability to build a rapport with a wider range of individuals.
  • Improved ability to adapt personal behaviours to meet the needs of others and make stronger connections.
  • Communicate more effectively.

This course runs Tuesday evenings 6pm-8.30pm with one Saturday (8th Nov 10am-4pm)

Entry Requirements

While there are no pre-requisites for the course students need to be aware that the course is very interactive and be prepared to discuss thoughts and feelings openly with their group while being respectful and supportive of others. This course is not recommended to anyone who has experienced a bereavement over the past twelve months.

Course Progression

You could progress onto a Level 3 Certificate in Counselling.
