What You Will Study

Are you a new or aspiring first line manager or supervisor? Do you have the drive and desire to lead and guide others to achieve high quality outcomes in the working environment?

The CMI Diploma in Principles of Management and Leadership is aimed at individuals who want to take on leadership responsibilities and progress their careers into a management role, and those currently in these roles who wish to develop their management knowledge and competence. The course provides practical skills in managing and developing individuals and teams, communicating for success, and delivering results.

This six-month, part-time course can be managed alongside work and incorporates both subject matter content and study skills support. There are two contact sessions per week: one full day at the Norwich City College campus, and one evening session conducted over Microsoft Teams. It is recommended that in addition to contact sessions participants should also factor in an equal amount of time per week for personal research, class preparation, and assignment completion.

As a course participant you will learn how to:

· Manage individuals to be effective in their roles
· Support teams and individuals through change
· Communicate more effectively in the workplace
· Manage daily activities to achieve results
· Monitor quality to improve outcomes

The Diploma attracts a varied range of participants from many sectors, at different ages, and with diverse work and life experience, which leads to a dynamic learning environment. The topics that you will explore will assist you in developing the skills, confidence and approach required for the next steps in leadership and management.

The course will start on 8th January 2026 and finish on 18th June 2026.

Entry Requirements

While there are no specific entry requirements for the course, you will need to demonstrate competency in English language due to the essential written component of the course. Ideally you will have a minimum of a grade C in GCSE English and feel confident in your assignment writing ability.

How You Will Be Assessed

Assessment will be through a variety of methods including assignments, work-based evidence, scenario and case study-based activity, and reflective statements or accounts.

Course Progression

Participants who have completed the Diploma and are aspiring to a management role may go on to take up positions such as: Team Leader, Supervisor, Project Officer, Shift Manager or Foreperson. The qualification may also be used as a stepping stone to access other CMI qualifications, such as CMI Level 5 in Management and Leadership with the goal of becoming a Chartered Manager.

Fees

The Level 3 Diploma is part of the Free Courses for Jobs initiative and is fully funded for learners who are age 19+ and earn under £25,700.
For those that do not qualify for Free Courses for Jobs, the cost of the course is £1950 - you will be able to pay in instalments.
All participants will be required to provide their own basic equipment and will also need the ability to access Microsoft Teams. CMI grant access to a wide range of learning resources in support of the course which participants will be introduced to during induction.
