What You Will Study
Introduction to criminology will explore the nature, causes and consequences of crime in society. It will look at various theories of criminal behaviour and an overview of the criminal justice system alongside social, economic and psychological factors influencing crime.
The course will also touch on the history of criminology, different types of crimes and the impact on individuals and communities.
You will cover:
- Foundations of Criminology: key criminological theories, concepts, and perspectives.
- Crime and Society: An understanding in the social, economic, and political factors influencing crime and criminal behaviour.
- Criminal Justice System: the roles and functions of law enforcement, courts, and corrections.
- Types of Crime: Identify and analyse different categories of crime (e.g., violent crime, white-collar crime, cybercrime).
- Crime Measurement: Evaluate sources of crime data (e.g., official statistics, victim surveys) and their limitations.
This course will run on Tuesdays from 6pm to 8pm.
