What You Will Study

The broad purpose of the occupation is to plan, select and size, install, commission, service and maintain (including fault finding, diagnosis and repair) zero carbon central heating and hot water systems in buildings including dwellings and industrial and commercial premises.

Zero carbon heat sources may include but are not limited to Ground and Air Source Heat Pumps and Solar Thermal Collectors. The occupation includes work on both new build and existing properties and typically involves the installation, service, fault finding and repair of zero carbon heating and hot water appliances, storage vessels, pipework, heat emitters and associated components and their mechanical and electrical control systems.

In their daily work, an employee in this occupation interacts with customers and end users, and as such requires a high level of customer service. The role is physical in nature and involves the manual handling of heavy equipment, working at height and in confined spaces.

An employee in this occupation will be responsible for working both independently with a minimum of supervision and also as a member of a team involving close liaison and cooperation with site and line management, colleagues and other trades.

How You Will Be Assessed

The End Point Assessment (EPA) is the final stage of an apprenticeship that evaluates whether an apprentice has gained the knowledge, skills, and behaviours outlined in their apprenticeship standard. The EPA for the Level 3 Low Carbon Heating Technician apprenticeship consists of the following:

  • Practical assessment with questions: You will be observed by an independent assessor completing a set of tasks. It will last 28 hours. They will ask you at least five questions.
  • Interview: You will have an interview with an independent assessor. It will last at least 75 minutes. They will ask you at least eight questions. The questions will be about certain aspects of your occupation. You need to compile a portfolio of evidence before the EPA gateway. You can use it to help answer the questions.

Where Your Course Can Take You

This course should support a learner’s workplace development which may include:

  • Continuation, development or promotion at work or within this sector.
  • A learner may also wish to become self- employed or own their own business.

Fees

Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, and the size of the company.

For employers who do not pay the apprenticeship levy and who take on an apprentice who is aged between 16-21 at the start of their apprenticeship, there will be no direct cost and the full training costs will be covered by Government funding. If the apprentice is aged 22+ the government partially subsides the training costs and the employer will need to pay 5% of the costs. In the case of this course, the fee would be £1,100.

A levy paying company will pay the full cost of the apprenticeship from their levy account which in this case would be £22,000.

Please note that course fees are to be paid by the employer and apprentices must not be asked to make a financial contribution toward their training.

To discuss apprenticeship course fees in more detail or for more information on recruiting an apprentice, please contact 01603 773365 or Apprenticeships@ccn.ac.uk.
