What You Will Study

Photography, in a digital era, is accessible to all and available in our pockets through smart devices. But what does it take to create quality, engaging photographs? A Level Photography will train you in taking an art and design approach to photography, teaching you skills in contemporary and historic practice.

You will study the art of documentary photography, mixed media, darkroom and analogue processing, non-camera based photography, studio work, Photoshop, and more. This is all while discovering how to express yourself and communicate through visual methods.

The course is taught in a well-equipped specialist room with high-spec PCs, professional printers, and industry standard photographic equipment. You will also have access to our traditional darkroom.

You will have the opportunity to visit galleries and exhibitions, and be invited on a yearly residential trip to a city renowned for its artistic heritage; recent destinations include Berlin, Amsterdam, Paris, and New York.?We arrange a variety of visiting guest speakers from exciting university courses and professional creatives, and at the end of the course, you will showcase your work at our annual Art and Design Show.

Entry Requirements

You will need to achieve at least six subjects at grade 4 or above, with at least four of these at grade 5 or above. A grade 5 or above in a GCSE art-based subject is needed (such as art, graphics, photography or textiles), or alternatively you must present a suitable portfolio of work to be assessed by the course leader at enrolment.

How You Will Be Assessed

You will be assessed through a range of practical work including experiments contained in a work journal, finished pieces of coursework and a response to a theme set by the exam board. You will also be required to do a written personal study investigating ideas in photography.

Course Progression

An A Level in Photography can lead to related courses at a college, art school or university. A Level Art opens up a variety of progression routes, such as degree-level study. Previous students have progressed onto prestigious universities such as Goldsmith’s, Central Saint Martin’s, London College of Fashion, Falmouth, Ravensbourne, and Norwich University of the Arts to name but a few. You may also want to progress onto our Level 4 Media Learning Company course. This one-year course mirrors what it is like to work as part of a media production company. You will work collaboratively on a wide range of projects that have been commissioned by external clients.
