What You Will Study

A Level History examines events that have shaped the world we live in today. You will analyse our past like a story, where the content will shift according to the storyteller. You will study modern European history, exploring various situations and concepts that still have relevance today, such as democracy and dictatorship. You will then investigate two European countries that underwent such changes in the twentieth century, namely Germany’s transition from democracy to dictatorship, and the rise and fall of fascism in Italy.

We consider Britain across the nineteenth century as a wealthy imperial superpower, the challenges faced by being involved in a series of conflicts, and the wide and varied experiences of British people during this time. You will then embark on a thorough study of why all the great powers of Europe chose to become involved in the conflict that became the First World War, examining various historians’ views.

Throughout this course, you will learn to understand more fully what is happening in the present through examining the past. You will learn the valuable skills of cross-referencing and engaging with a wide range of material,
as well as being able to write analytically and in depth.
