What You Will Study

This course is perfect for genuine lovers of the written word, as you will delve into the work of diverse and iconic writers of poetry, prose and plays.

In your first year of study, you will study texts through the perspective of tragedy, and in your second year you will examine texts that feature elements of political and social protest. There is also the opportunity to explore a personal choice of poetry and prose through the lens of both feminism and ecocriticism, as part of the non-examination assessment unit? Our course follows the AQA specification B syllabus.

You will be introduced to a variety of influential and inspirational writers from F Scott Fitzgerald to Khaled Hosseini. You will engage in literary debates and discussions with your peers, as well as developing your perceptive, close-reading and writing skills.

You will be given access to a plethora of resources from our well-stocked library, alongside a number of useful databases and journal-based articles to aid your studies.

English Literature students are offered a range of fantastic extra-curricular opportunities. These have included a trip to New York to grant students insight into key settings for a text, a trip to the Theatre Royal in Norwich for a matinee performance of ‘The Kite Runner’, and a trip to the Globe Theatre in London to watch a performance of Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’.
