Musical theatre students receive unique performance lesson from local west end star
Over 30 musical theatre students from City College Norwich took part in a Les Misérables themed theatrical workshop led by local west end star, Rob Houchen. The one-day workshop, which took place on Friday 13th January, formed part of the rehearsals for the students’ special guest appearance in his upcoming show Home & Unplugged at The Seagull Theatre in Lowestoft on Sunday 22nd January.
Mr Houchen shared his performance tips and experiences of playing one of Les Misérables’ main characters, Marius. He also guided the students through some of the musical’s famous numbers, including At The End of the Day and One Day More, before rehearsing the two songs the students will perform alongside him in his sold out show.
The overall experience will allow students to gain real industry experience and learn about how to be successful in the industry. They will now complete one final rehearsal before the show which will include Rob’s unplugged versions of classic musical theatre numbers as well as pop style tracks including one of his own.
Jake Jenner, 19, from Lowestoft said:
“The workshop was really inspiring because I was able to work with someone who is from Lowestoft who has made it in this industry. The main thing I learnt from the workshop was how to embody the character that I’m playing – I really enjoyed it.”

“It’s really special to be able to come home and not only perform with local talent but work with it in a learning environment. I was inspired by the passion and commitment of the group. There was a real will to listen and let go of inhibitions and be and free with creative choices, which i believe is one of the great sides to choosing theatre, and important to help you learn from your own work."
Laura Hodges, Musical Theatre Course Leader, City College Norwich said:
“Performing alongside Rob Houchen is an amazing opportunity for the students to gain real industry experience with one of the best and most in demand west end performers. The students thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and can’t wait to join him on stage.”
