Student film challenging perceptions of homelessness shortlisted for award

A hard-hitting short film about homelessness, by former City College Norwich student Andy Prosser, has been shortlisted for a Royal Television Society (East) Student Award.
Andy created the 4-minute film as his Final Major Project for The Media Learning Company Foundation Diploma Level 3 course.
‘Through These Eyes’ dramatizes the life of a person who becomes homeless, depicting key moments from infancy to adulthood, filmed entirely from their perspective.
Explaining the motivation behind the film, Andy says:
A lot of the time you see someone on the street and you don’t know the story behind their situation. The research shows that childhood trauma is one of the main factors and causes of homelessness. So for me it was about putting the audience in the shoes of someone who is homeless, to create a bit more awareness about it.”
Keen to reflect the realities of the circumstances that can lead to homelessness, Andy consulted with homeless charities in researching and putting together the film. He hopes the film will make viewers think twice before judging people who have become homeless:
You don’t know what homeless people have been through, and you shouldn’t disregard them as second class citizens, but just have a bit more compassion I think.”
29-year-old Andy, who is from Norwich, joined the City College Norwich course to help make a career change from finance to media. He has since been taken on by Norwich-based filmmaking and production company, Eye Film.
Lorraine Sutherland, Learning Company Leader, said:
For Andy to have been shortlisted for an RTS East Student Award is exceptional. Through the unique opportunities available on the Media Learning Company Foundation Diploma he progressed quickly to a professional standard of filmmaking. We are delighted that his work has been recognised with this nomination”
