Setting out on a career in hairdressing
23rd September 2019 – Tags: Hairdressing
A career in hairdressing can become a rewarding job for life, as testified by local hairdresser Pat Wilkin who is celebrating 50 years in the industry.
Pat’s story was recently featured on BBC Look East – and reporter Mike Liggins popped along to our Solutions Hair Salon to talk to a couple of students who are just setting out in the industry.
Caryss and Elise are both on the full-time level 3 hairdressing course with City College Norwich.
It keeps you on your toes
Elise says she loves the variety that comes with the job: “I love meeting new people. You never know who’s going to walk in the door. You’re always doing something new. No hair is the same. You’re learning every single day. It’s really good, I love it.”
Caryss agrees, saying: “Every day you’re always being challenged, you never know what you’re going to get come through the door. One day you might have a colour correction, or a cut, and it’s just exciting really, it keeps you on your toes.”
Making a career out of your passion
Both Caryss and Elise have been interested in hair from a relatively young age. They are already planning their next steps after college and where they want hairdressing to take them.
After she finishes the course, Elise plans to further develop her experience by working in a hair salon in London. Eventually she would like to return to Norfolk and set up a business with her older sister, Carly, a beautician who also did her training with City College Norwich.
Caryss says: “I’m looking to qualify with my level 3 and I want to take that into a salon and be a senior. I plan to build up for a few years, build up my clients, and then I want to go on in the future and become self-employed.”
Always there to help
The support they get from the hairdressing lecturers at City College Norwich, together with the opportunities to build up experience with clients in Solutions Salon, are seen as real strengths of the course.
Caryss says, “City College is amazing, the tutors are very helpful, it’s really hands-on. If you ever need any help they are always there to show you what you need and what you’ve got to use. I’ve learnt so quickly.”
And Elise adds, “I love it at City College. The teachers are so welcoming, they are like your friends as well, they are always willing to help. The girls and the boys are all absolutely lovely, it’s a lovely environment to work in.”
