Norfolk Teacher Training Centre now offering Primary teacher training

16th January 2019

From September 2019, Norfolk Teacher Training Centre will offer two pathways to Qualified Teacher Status for aspiring Primary school teachers.

Both the Primary Teaching Apprenticeship and School Direct course are school-based teacher training routes.  In each case, trainees spend 4 days a week based in schools, learning in the classroom from day one, supported by mentors in each partner school.  This is supplemented through a rigorous professional development programme with NTTC, which is part of City College Norwich.

The Primary Teaching Apprenticeship is ideally suited to individuals already working in Primary schools, for example as Teaching Assistants, who with the support of their current employer, now have the opportunity to become fully-qualified teachers.

The Apprenticeship, which takes 4 terms to complete, offers Primary schools a way to develop and retain existing staff who have already demonstrated that they have the attributes needed to make it as an outstanding teacher.

The School Direct pathway differs from the Apprenticeship in that it does not require applicants to already be working in a school, and is typically chosen as a route into teaching for career changers.  The School Direct course takes 1-year to complete.

In both cases, the trainee teachers must already be qualified to degree level.  Successful completion of both the Primary Apprenticeship and the School Direct course leads to Qualified Teacher Status.

Since NTTC opened in September 2014, 100 per cent of its Secondary trainees have gone on to work as teachers after completing the course – with the vast majority remaining within the region.

Paul McCann, Director, Norfolk Teacher Training Centre, said:

“Norfolk’s future educational success depends on having outstanding teaching, through amazing teachers, in our Primary schools.  Building on NTTC’s proven track record and excellent school partnerships in Secondary education, we can’t wait to develop the next generation of Primary teachers for the region.”
