"My time at City College Norwich has allowed me to try new things and work out where my passions lie"

27th January 2020 – Tags: CCN Journey

Current student, Maya Elphick, shares how her City College Norwich journey helped her turn a chapter, building her confidence and ambitions.

The space and time to mature

Before attending City College Norwich, I was home-schooled for four years due to health reasons.

I was attracted to City College Norwich as I liked how students were treated as young adults – and given the space and time to mature. The relaxed but enthusiastic atmosphere at college seemed different to other sixth forms. I decided to study A Level English Literature, Film Studies, and Philosophy.

The transition to college

The transition from home-schooling to college was not nearly as difficult as I had expected – I've found the college environment welcoming and relaxed. I feel comfortable at college to learn and socialise,  and being here has helped me to build my confidence.

Friendships and opportunities

Paris

Maya enjoyed an A Level trip to Paris

I have enjoyed some fantastic opportunities as part of my time at college. These have included attending the York Film Festival, and the college trip to Paris. These have benefited me academically – but have also allowed me to solidify friendships with my course mates.

I have really enjoyed my time at college so far, I have met a diverse group of people and received brilliant support from my teachers and peers.

Turning enthusiasm into a career

My experience at college has shown me where my passions lie, as well as how to turn this passion for words into a specific career or goal. Its allowed me to try new things and work out what aspects of my A Levels I would like to pursue at a degree level.

Maya aims to study at UEA in Norwich

For my next step, I plan to study English Literature and Creative Writing at University of East Anglia.

Long term aspirations

My career goal is to be a writer. Whether it’s journalism, screenwriting, or publishing, I want a job where I can pour my creative energy into something I am passionate about.
