"My City College Norwich journey helped me on my career path"

Current student, Megan Reid, shares how her City College Norwich journey helped her gain key skills and find opportunities in healthcare.
I chose to attend City College Norwich, studying BTEC Level 3 Health and Social Care, as I liked how the college promotes independent learning. It’s one of the few colleges in my local area that offers a Health and Social Care BTEC with work experience opportunities.
I visited an open day at the college, and I found the course really interesting and the staff were friendly.
Work experiences and placements
I’ve undertaken a lot of work experience, which has really improved my UCAS application for university and is great preparation for future employment in this sector.
In particular, the College arranged an eight-week work placement at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital. This was a great opportunity to view different healthcare settings, including wards, outpatient clinics and main theatres. I’ve gained invaluable work experience with a variety of service users.
Confidence and communication
I’ve really progressed during my course, I’ve grown in confidence, developing key skills such as communication, organisation, and teamwork. I’ve also got involved with open events hosted by the college and represented the college at HSC Provider conferences.
I’ve really enjoyed my time at college, the staff are very supportive and flexible, and take the time to build your confidence in your abilities. This experience has helped me to realise that nursing is a path I’d like to follow as a career.
I would like to study a nursing degree at university, with a view to training as a registered nurse.
