Ryan Edge shows how his eye-opening City College Norwich journey has helped him achieve his ambition as an Ophthalmic Photographer.
I studied Level 3 Photography at City College Norwich, completing my course in 2014. I chose to study photography as I wanted to focus entirely on one subject that I really enjoyed. Attending college also helped me to experience a different environment and city, outside of my hometown of Dereham.
A fantastic experience
I had a fantastic experience at City College Norwich – I really enjoyed my time here. The course tutors were consistently supportive and engaging, I met some great people on my course.
Stepping out of my comfort zone
I honed and developed my people skills at college, frequently stepping out of my comfort zone to work with the general public on assignments for my course.
I was impressed by the amount of opportunities I was given to undertake projects outside of college, for organisations such as the Eastern Daily Press, National Centre for Writing and Norwich Fashion Week.
Developing my portfolio and studying photography at university
I developed my portfolio during my time at college, gaining plenty of work experience, as well as confidence in using photography studios and darkrooms.
Supported by the college, I progressed to continue my studies at university level, gaining a Photography Degree from the University of Suffolk in 2017.
Working as a medial photographer
I am now a full time Ophthalmic (Medical) Photographer at the Norfolk and Norwich Hospital, where I have worked for two years. In my role, I take diagnostic imaging of patient’s eyes for Ophthamology clinics.
