Summary
This course is for individuals wishing to develop higher-level professional skills relevant to the mechanical engineering sector.
The purpose of Higher Nationals in Mechanical Engineering is to develop students as professional, self-reflecting individuals who are able to meet the demands of employers in the rapidly evolving engineering sector and adapt to a constantly changing world. The qualifications also aim to widen access to higher education and enhance the career prospects of those who undertake them.
The Higher National Certificate (HNC) is a Level 4 qualification made up of 120 credits.
The programme team uses a combination of traditional classroom teaching, open learning and research-based experiential learning, laboratory experiments and demonstrations, industry standard IT applications and group activities.
The course comprises of mandatory and additional units.
The mandatory units are:
Engineering Design
Engineering Maths
Engineering Science
Managing a Professional Engineering Project
Mechanical Principles
Fundamentals of Thermodynamics and Heat Engines

Students will normally attend college one day per week for one and a half years.

Entry Requirements
BTEC Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent).
Applications from students whose first language is not English are welcome. For International students we require evidence of proficiency in English (including writing, speaking, listening and reading), the required minimum is: IELTS Academic (SELT) 6.0 overall (minimum 5.5 in all components). Please contact the Advice shop for advice and guidance. International candidates are also actively encouraged to access the International Students webpage.

Progression
The BTEC (Pearson) HNC programme is widely recognised by employers and professional bodies. You may be able to progress onto an HND (Higher National Diploma) in Mechanical Engineering at City College Norwich (subject to sufficient numbers of students requesting to progress from their HNC qualification with us) or at other providers of higher national qualifications.

£750 per 15 credits plus a registration fee.
