If you would like to explore making stretch clothing patterns, then this is the course for you. This course will give students skills and knowledge to develop pattern cutting skills for stretch pattern blocks for trousers and tops.
You will learn basic construction techniques for stretch fabrics to support making bespoke stretch clothing.
This course has been designed for students that wish to continue developing pattern cutting skills. You will learn how to draft and adapt pattern blocks specific to stretch fabrics. This course is suitable for students that have attended Beginners Pattern Cutting Course and now want to take their skills to the next level.
This course will allow you to gain valuable skills and understanding of the technical steps of construction for basic garments and how to adapt basic blocks into a range of simple bespoke designs for trousers and simple tops.
On the course you will explore features of stretch fabrics and what needs to be considered before drafting patterns.

  • How to layout pattern pieces efficiently to use least amount of fabric and impact of stripes, checks and patterned fabrics
  • Preparation of fabric for sewing, including marking up fabric, using notches, chalk pencils, tailors tacks etc.
  • Applying stay stitching and interfacings.
  • Explore the technical order that garments should be constructed to make it easy to make.
  • Convert basic blocks into relaxed designs and how to move darts. Add in design ease to make neckline features and bust gathering patterns.
    Pattern Development : During this element of the course you will explore how to convert basic blocks into bespoke designs through adapting blocks to make patterns and associated facings and finishing techniques.
    Course details: Monday 6th & 13th January 20/Wednesday 8 & 15th January 20 (2 weeks x 2 nights per week) 6-9pm
    You will need to bring a pencil/paper and calculator.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, you should be able to create patterns from a flat drawing and create customised patterns from basic pattern blocks for stretch trousers and tops.
