Intermediate Apprenticeship in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools Level 2

Apprenticeships are work-based training programmes designed around the needs of employers, which lead to nationally recognised qualifications. This Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship is designed for learning support staff (Teaching Assistants, Classroom Assistants, Learning Support Assistants) whose responsibilities at work are closely supervised. They will be working under the direct supervision of the class teacher whose lesson planning and day-to-day direction set the framework within which the individual works.

The typical length of this Apprenticeship course is 18 months.

Please note all Apprenticeships involve an element of college attendance and also involve off the job training.


Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (competence and knowledge element) through CACHE. 9 mandatory units must be achieved and some optional units to be discussed with the assessor.

Candidates should have a D or above in GCSE Maths and English, or Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths. Potential candidates should:

• Have some experience of working with children and young people which would give a distinct advantage in ascertaining suitability
• Willing to reflect on their own practice, learn, and apply that learning in the workplace
• Able to relate well to children, young people and adults
• Show enthusiasm to work with children and young people and be working for a minimum of 30 hours per week and a maximum of 48 hours – this is inclusive of any study days at college
• Numerate and literate
• Have a suitable level of physical fitness to perform some aspects of the job roles
• Be willing to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Services (DBS) check
• Must be 16+ years old

In order to enrol onto an Apprenticeship, you need to be employed in a relevant job role and undertake a range of tasks which would enable you to complete the Apprenticeship qualification.
Apprenticeship course fees are subject to the age of the apprentice, the payroll of the employer and the number of employees. Course fees are paid by the employer and not the apprentice. Employers who take on an apprentice aged between 16-18 years old, or with an Educational Health Care Plan, will receive an Incentive Payment to help cover their costs. The Apprentice will be required to attend Master Classes at City College Norwich for one full day approximately every 4 weeks where the core theoretical, underpinning knowledge elements of the Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools will be taught – portfolio building will also form part of this day. Assessment is via a variety of methods, including case studies, assignments, practical assessments and projects.
Progression onto a level 3 Apprenticeship or within the workplace.
Career or academic progression may include continuation, development or promotion at work or within the business sector, progression onto an Advanced Apprenticeship, Higher Apprenticeship or higher education.
