BA(Hons) Tourism Management
Designed to enhance your personal development, employability and effectiveness in the hospitality and tourism sector. It will offer a flexible approach to study, built on partnership and the needs of current and future business practice. Our programme is highly relevant to current industrial practice through regular staff industry up-dating, current ‘live’ case studies, visiting speakers from industry and a focus on leadership and enterprise. All of City College Norwich’s Degree programmes are validated by the UEA, meaning that the quality of the awards you get is assured by a world renowned Higher Education organisation. The UEA is a UK top 20 and world top 150 university.
The course is delivered through a mix of workshops, lectures, seminars, practical sessions, tutorials and self-directed study, again with emphasis on industry practice. The curriculum will include:
Year 1 (level 4)
- Organisational behaviour and human resource management. Examines the principles underlying the managers’ role in a time of change
- Hospitality, event & tourism business environment. Understand this complexity and the contribution made by the sector to the UK and examine the industry’s main sectors and sub-sectors
- Principles of tourism. Introduces the basic principles and practice of tourism management and investigate how travel and tourism organisations operate and the role they play in industry and society
- Special interest tourism. Investigate the growth of the specialist tourism market and research specific special interest tourism providers
- Tourism destination management. Introduces the location of tourist destinations and principal geographic features as part of the knowledge required within the travel and tourism industry
Year 2 (level 5)
- Revenue and yield management. Explore key operational and economic characteristics of the sector. Key emphasis will be placed on the application of revenue and yield management techniques within the sector.
- Marketing and consumer behaviour. Encourages critical thinking critically about marketing practice in a 21st century context
- Research methods. Develop an appreciation of qualitative and quantitative methodology, research methods and critical thinking skills
- Leadership and professional development . Introduces contemporary theories of leadership and developing winning teams within organisations
- Visitor attraction and heritage management. Provides knowledge and understanding of heritage and visitor attraction management
- Tourism Development and Planning. Increases awareness of the need to plan and manage tourism at all levels, within a national, regional and local framework
Year 3 (level 6)
- Sustainable development. Explore sustainability through case study/ project work
- Strategic management. Explores key debates and issues in current strategic thinking and practice, supporting strategic problem identification, analysis and decision-making.
- Contemporary issues in tourism. Cutting edge issues in the tourism literature today.
- Dissertation. Choose, undertake and report upon a major investigation of a selected topic relevant to the sport, health and exercise industry.
Applicants should have a relevant New Diploma, GNVQ Advanced, A levels, NVQ Level 3, UCAS tariff of 48, completion of a course over two years at Level 3, or completion of an Access course. Plus GCSEs in Maths and English or other appropriate awards at either grades A* - C or grade five and above. Mature students (21+) without formal qualifications may apply and may be asked to take a written test. All applicants may be required to undertake tests in literacy and application of number. Applicants whose first language is not English will be required to show an IELTscore of at least 6.0.
All modules have at least one major piece of course work and some seminar work. Some modules also have timed exercises/ exams which are often ‘open book’.
Graduates progress to study at post graduate level in vocational areas, teaching or management training schemes.
Hospitality and tourism are vibrant and exciting industries to work in. Tourism has been the UK’s fastest growing sector in employment terms since 2010 according to the official body, Visit Britain. Whilst hospitality is the fourth largest employing industry in the UK and will need a further 524,000 staff by 2020, according to People 1st, the sector skills council. These trends suggest there will be plenty of opportunities in the coming years.
Many students go on to work in the Service sector in operations where management and ‘people’ skills are highly valued. The programme is designed to enable students to enter the wider industry base including tourism, hospitality, events, retail and leisure sectors.
