Summary
This course provides the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to pursue a career in sport and related areas.
Britain’s sports industry is hitting top form. In the past five years it has become a £20 billion industry in the UK and experts believe it will continue to grow long after the legacy of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
This qualification will give you a good understanding and knowledge of the sports and active leisure sector as well as developing the essential skills required for employment or progression to further qualifications and training.
Experience is highly valued by employers and it will improve your career prospects. The course brings classroom work into real work based practice by planning and running sport and leisure events and making use of the state of the art Solutions Gym.
You will visit local health and fitness centres and hear speakers from Active Norfolk and other professionals in the industry to give you an insight into job roles and career paths.
The course is made up of units which may include:
- Anatomy and physiology (Exam)
- Fitness Training (Exam)
- Performance psychology
- Planning and leading activities
- Business skills in sport
- Effects of exercise
- Nutrition for sport
Your team work and communication skills will be developed through course activities, both of which are key skills future employers look for. You will have the opportunity to participate in team sports as part of the programme both on site at College and external venues.
Good English and Maths skills are essential for many jobs and courses you will progress onto. The Government has made it a priority for students to improve these skills and your course programme will reflect this key aim. Depending on your grades when you start your course, you could either study Functional Skills or GCSEs alongside the other parts of your course programme. Entry Requirements
4 GCSE's at grade 3 or above, including English Language and Maths.
For progressing students, you will need a Level 1 at Merit, plus two Level 1 Functional Skills or equivalent.
Assessment
Assessment takes a variety of forms including; Written assignments, external and internal assessments, practical assessments and observations, group and individual presentations and peer group assessments.
Progression
If you successfully complete the course, with a good attendance and disciplinary record, you could progress onto:
- BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sports and Exercise Science
- BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Sport (Fitness Services)

Further academic options could include study at degree or foundation Degree at a university or College. City College Norwich offers a Foundation Degree in Sport, Health and Exercise with an opportunity to top up to the BSc (Hons) Applied Sport, Health and Exercise.
Career Progression
The sport and active leisure industry supports over 450,000 jobs in the UK. Over the last five years it has become a £20 billion industry and experts predict it will continue to grow faster than other sectors in the economy.
This course will allow you to progress onto many careers which include a gym instructor or leisure centre assistant, personal trainer, sport development, sports coach. Fees
If you are a UK or home fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course, tuition fees are free. If you are aged 19 and over please contact the Advice Shop.
There will be costs for equipment, uniform and trips. These include;
Approximately £100-120 for uniform, £20 course materials, £100 contribution for enrichment activities.
