Production Arts Extended Diploma

On this two year course you will work towards the University of the Arts (UAL) Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts. Through collaborative learning and immersive study, you can take your production skills to the next level.

You will produce at least three productions each year within our theatre, technical theatre studio and local performing arts venues.

City College Norwich has excellent facilities, including the 180-seat Platform theatre, rehearsal and dance studios, technical theatre workshop, TV Studio, audio recording studio, costume and prop stores.

Our technical facilities emulate and surpass local professional venues. You will learn on a vast range of technical equipment from the biggest and best names in the industry including,

  • Thomas PARcans to Martin Professional LED moving head lighting fixtures
  • Industry standard ETC lighting control systems
  • Large Martin Audio and KV2 sound systems
  • Yamaha Digital and Soundcraft Analogue sound control platforms

Entry Requirements

Minimum of 4 GCSEs at grade 9-4 including English and Maths and, if taken, GCSE Drama. Or a relevant Level 2 Diploma at Merit or above including GCSE Maths and English at grade 9-4. Students will audition and be interviewed prior to selection; students will also need to provide an academic reference.

Objective

The Extended Diploma in Production Arts is designed to provide you with the knowledge, skills, and understanding necessary to access and progress to drama school, degree-level study or employment in the performing arts.

Assessment

The University of the Arts (UAL) Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing and Production Arts is assessed through a series of projects that are designed to broaden your skills, experience and expertise.

The projects are multi-disciplinary and you will be expected to work collaboratively and proactively with fellow students as well as external clients and stakeholders. Much of the written evidence, which supports your performance work, is in the form of a digital portfolio. You will need to update this regularly to document your development and research.

Other evidence may include presentations, essays and portfolios. The final end-point assessment (commonly referred to as the Final Major Project) decides the student’s overall grade for the year which is graded as: Pass, Merit or Distinction.

The full course (Extended Diploma) is allocated the following UCAS tarriff points: PASS (72), MERIT (120), DISTINCTION (168).
All Student work is internally assessed and scrutinised by external verifiers from the University of the Arts London (UAL) to ensure that academic standards are adhered to and maintained.

Progression

After successful completion of the full Level 3 Extended Diploma course, students move into a variety of different professional pathways.

  • Further study and training at university
  • Specialised vocational training at accredited Drama schools
  • Degrees in fields other than performing arts (the UCAS tariff points mean that you can do this)
  • Working in the industry
  • Other employment or apprenticeships

Career Progression

City College Norwich is a member of the University of the Arts London (UAL) Progression Partnership to promote the recruitment of talented, creative students from high quality further education institutions to UAL higher education degree level courses.

The course team also work with higher education providers such as Guildhall School of Music and Drama, Rose Bruford and Central School of Speech and Drama, Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama and Backstage Academy to ensure that our students are ready and prepared for their next step.

For those students who choose not to pursue careers within the production and performing arts industries the course provides fantastic opportunities to develop collaborative working skills, problem solving, creative and the higher order evaluative skills demanded by universities and employers.

Fees

If you are a UK or home fee status student and aged 16-18 on the 31st August before the start of your course, tuition fees are free. If you are aged 19 and over please contact the Advice Shop. It is essential production students see as much theatre as they can. Therefore we arrange regular trips to the theatres across the county to see a variety of work produced. Termly outings include a range of theatre shows, professional workshops and workplace related activities.
