Journalism students from City College Norwich have spent their first day working in the Archant newsroom, alongside reporters working on the EDP and Evening News.
It’s part of a partnership between Archant and the college to train the next generation of journalists for Norfolk.
Students on the Foundation Degree in Journalism are taking part in four specially organised ‘news days’ at the newspaper offices, where they can take part in editorial meetings and get advice from reporters and editors.
The aim is to give them experience of working in a real newsroom to support the learning in class. There is also hands-on support from the editorial team who are able to suggest ideas for stories and possible angles to follow up.
First year student Jamil Benmehidi said: “It’s so brilliant being in the newsroom, much better than in the classroom. You see the real fruits of the labour appearing in the newspaper.”
News stories written by the students will be used for college assessments and the best are published on the college’s journalism website, ccnextra.co.uk.
Any students who come up with exclusive or original stories may also be able to get their report into one of the Archant newspapers.
The FdA Journalism is a two year full time course. Applications for September 2011 should be made via UCAS. Entry requirements are two A levels at C or above (or equivalent). For further information contact the Advice Shop, City College Norwich: 01603 773311.
