Students’ Artistic Work to be Exhibited in Former Megastore

A Level Art, Photography and Textiles Exhibition, Sat 19 - Wed 23 June

City College Norwich’s A-level art, photography and textiles students are preparing to hold their annual exhibition in the impressive 3-story space of the former Zavvi / Virgin Megastore shop, thanks to the support of The Mall.  The students will be following in the footsteps of illustrious British artists such as Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas who also used an empty shop space to show their artwork during the early 1990s recession.

The exhibition will be open daily to the public from Saturday 19th to Wednesday 23rd June, 9am-5pm, and will feature the work of over 160 AS and A2 students. On show will be an exciting array of art, photography and textiles work, ranging from a set of houses made from sweets (part of a study around fairy tales) to a photography and video installation based around the theme of surveillance in society.

The exhibition is being supported by The Mall Norwich who have allowed the use of the space, providing a benefit to the community and City College Norwich’s students after the store closed last year.  A-Level student Ben Hemmens, 18, from Norwich, whose installation piece will be on display in the Manager’s Office of the former music store said: “I am really pleased that my work is being displayed at the Zavvi store. It is a real opportunity and a great experience that I will take with me when I start my Fine Art degree in September.”

Dick Palmer, Principal, City College Norwich said: “We are really proud of the quality of the work that our students have produced and it is fantastic that they are being given this opportunity to exhibit their work in such a great city centre location.  We are grateful to The Mall for their support for this event, which provides yet another example of why Norwich is a real city of culture”.

Alan Day, General Manager, The Mall Norwich, said: "I am delighted to be able to help show this exhibition and wish all the students good luck".
