The StartUp Lounge at City College Norwich, the innovative and exciting new space for teaching students entrepreneurship and enterprise skills, welcomed many of the region’s leading new businesses for the 2011 EDP Future50 launch.
The event provided an opportunity for this highly successful group of entrepreneurs to see and hear what City College Norwich - who alongside North Herts College, Gateshead College, New College Nottingham and Warwickshire College have developed the Gazelle group - are doing to support the next generation of business start-ups.
As well as having the opportunity to look around the pioneering new StartUp Lounge – which will be officially launched in the new year – the Future50 guests also met students on the BTEC Business with Enterprise, which is part of the Peter Jones Enterprise Academy at the College.
Addressing the Future50 audience, Dick Palmer, Principal, City College Norwich, said:
“An entrepreneurial college is one which does three things; firstly, supporting new start-ups, secondly helping existing businesses to grow and, thirdly, getting our students into jobs.”
“This StartUp Lounge is a facility which will enable our students to explore the skills and expertise required to start up a business.”
“We’ve designed it so that the students go through a journey, starting with the Ideas section where they come up with their business ideas, right through to The Studio where they can go in and practice their pitching and presentation skills.”
Kevin Horne, Chief Executive of enterprise agency NWES, said:
“Here at City College we are seeing the start of a new attitude, an attitude of enterprise for young people and students.”
“It really is incumbent upon all of us to play our part in making sure that young people have an enterprising attitude.”
Paul Hill, EDP Business Editor, said that the 2011 Future50 companies had a combined revenue of £174m and accounted for almost 2,000 jobs locally.
